GST Changes – A Contrarian View

The Modi government recently reduced GST rates on a range of goods. Also, it ought to reduce the number of GST slabs as was being demanded by many including Rahul Gandhi.

I demur.

What is the rational for having less number of GST rates? We may have 100 different rates even running into decimals. It could all be dependent just on the HSN code and fed into the computer where it would be updated from a central website. Such that on making an invoice, the GST rate applicable would automatically be selected. What is the problem in having that? Nothing.

The problem is not having multiple GST rates. The problem is when the same product can be sought to be classified as one or the other in order to escape higher GST rates and to try to sneak into a lower slab. This gives incentive for dishonesty and ultimately puts the honest manufacturers in a position of disadvantage. The solution to this is to look at which products are susceptible to this kind of jugglery and to do the needful so that GST rate evasion is no longer an issue for that category of products. There are many products for which evasion is just not possible or too difficult because by their very nature, those products are being produced in the highly organised sector only. Let us say television or vehicles. These should be subjected to high GST rates in order to get revenue for the government. On the other hand, take a product like the humble maska bun. There was a seminar with our respected finance minister in South India and a trade representative came up and told that he owns a restaurant and there are different GST rates depending on whether it is a plain bun or a butter maska bun or muska ban with jam in it. Now, such a scenario is nothing but a recipe to invite tax evasion. So it would be smarter for the government to forego their revenue and to have minimal or rate of GST on these things. Have minimal or rate of GST on products which are being produced in such a decentralised way that it would be impossible to regulate or it would be counter-productive in that the government would have to create an extreme license Raj with its tentacles in the smallest towns in order to enforce rules. Why not just take money from the big manufacturers and leave the other product categories out of the GST ambit?

The government does need to do the needful to ensure that cases of inverted duty structure which compel industry to seek GST refunds are nullified or minimised. These are cesspools of corruption. It can tweak the duty of the final products accordingly again. That means that it cannot adhere to the concept of having a very low number of GST slabs.

The government can also have the concept of having certain cash cow products as such that it’s GST can never be claimed unless the customer is making some valuation and selling it effectively as the same or as a very similar product. For example, if I buy cement for my construction of my new office, then I cannot claim the GST on it. Government should strengthen these rules. Also, it should ensure that these rules are not circumvented by the manufacturer of that product using it in-house. For example, if the manufacturer of cement uses his own cement to make his own office building, he should be compelled to pay GST as soon as the cement was manufactured, as it should be treated as a sale, though it was used in-house. This will put a stop to big end-to-end, conglomerates misusing this provision.

Nobel Peace Prize for Trump!

Trump has achieved the seemingly impossible.

He has reversed the trajectory of the divergent paths of China and India, and has got the ‘Dragon and Elephant to dance together’!

And to think that a few short years before, we were clutching at each others’ throats in Galwan. And now we are breaking bread together.

Nobel Peace Prize for Trump!

Gautam Gambhir plugging for Crypto? Shameful

Gautam Gambhir Crypto.

This is today’s front page of the Gujarat Samachar.

The very next page is of PM Modi exhorting us to buy swadeshi.

Here, an ex-MP of his party is exhorting people to gamble their hard earned money on crypto. A 100% transfer out of country with nothing to show for it

And Gautam Gambhir is paid Rs 14 crores per annum by BCCI as coach. Hardly in need of further pocket money.

Shameful!

Define farce: Trump as the peacemaker for Ukraine

I had mentioned by incredulity on the chimera of US helping out Zelensky for moving towards peace for Ukraine.

Today’s headlines on the NYTimes confirms this, while at the same time trying to continue the same lame propaganda job for the Trump administration.

The first headline frankly admits that there is no progress on peace.

The second headline writer, handed a separate agenda from the first, proclaims a victory of Trumpian peace-making skills:

All credit to Trump’s truce negotiations for the return of 6,000 bodies (then confirmed as ‘dead’) of Ukrainians to Ukraine.

Wow! What a victory! Nobel Peace Prize for Trump!

This is beyond farcical.

“Delhi Poilce Commissioner Shunted Out on CM Attack” I don’t get it

I got the above news.

For context, there was a highly despicable attack on the lady CM of Delhi Ms Rekha Gupta.

The police commissioner is being held responsible and faces ignominy.

Does he deserve the brickbats?

The physical attack in the nature of a slap and more, happened during Jan Sunwai – a session of interaction with the common public. The attacker had come from Gujarat all the way for this. It is apparent that any member of the public could attend.

Was the public who came to meet her, to be kept at a particular distance in police presence? If so, then police apathy can be said to be in the above case.

But I believe that was not in the the matter above.

Anybody could attend the Jan Sunwai and the CM was conducting herself so as to be seen as freely accessible to the public at large.

There are lots of such instances. E.g. when a politician is in a public program and goes around shaking hands. Is he open to any random attack? Of course he is. Can he blame the police commissioner for this? I believe he cannot. For he has himself consciously chosen to mingle so with the public, considering the pros and cons.

A politician with high risk to himself, like Narendra Modi, will not be accessible. Those who do not perceive such a risk, will keep the police at bay and the common public close.

Such a stray incident, neither warrants blame on the police head, nor does it warrant any drastic change in style of further such events. Just some more distance between the CM and the people with a body guard at hand.

But that is Madam CM’s call. Do not make a scapegoat of the police commissioner.

In your quest for venting anger or worse still, for some performative action.

Who is the saboteur? Russia or …?

NYTimes is implying continuous sabotage operations by Russia.

Which have been the main documented sabotage attacks?

 • The Nord Stream 1 and 2 natural gas pipelines transporting Russian gas to Europe were damaged by underwater explosions in September 2022, rendering most of the pipelines inoperable.

 • Since late 2022 and especially through 2024-2025, there have been multiple suspected sabotage attacks on undersea cables (telecommunications, power) and pipelines connecting Nordic countries, the Baltic states, Germany, and Russia.

 • The damaged infrastructure includes gas pipelines (Nord Stream, TurkStream) and telecommunications cables linking Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Latvia, and Germany.

Who lost because of the sabotage?

 • Europe suffered significant disruption in natural gas supplies from Russia, leading to energy shortages and higher prices.

 • The pipelines are majority-owned by Russian state gas company Gazprom; Russia lost the ability to transport gas to Europe through these routes.

 • European countries relying on these pipelines and cables for energy and communication faced challenges and increased vulnerability.

 • The sabotage heightened tensions and underscored Europe’s dependence on Russian energy prior to the war and subsequent sanctions.

Thus the primary financial loss was on Russia, as it was exporting the gas from those pipelines. Europe was forced to make up its gas requirement from other sources.

Who would be the prima facie perpetrator of these sabotage attacks? Who had the profit motive?

Certainly not Russia.

Yet, the international press since that day has placed the allegation squarely on Russia. Even as German authorities later issued a warrant for a Ukrainian native. Russia itself blames this on NATO and Ukraine. But who cares? The media first decides its agenda, and then goes about its business.

Nytimes praising Zelensky for ‘progress with Trump’!

Hey! Who are you kidding?

Zelensky made no progress with Trump. Not a bit.

Except for learning to lavish praise while still getting skinned.

The other minor headlines proclaim – US won’t send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine.

Also, Europe’s leaders emerge without a clear plan. Even while assembled like schoolboys around Trump in his Oval office.

I can add a few more headlines :

Trump rules out Ukraine joining NATO.

Trump rules out Russia-Ukraine ceasefire as a prerequisite for peace talks, and is ok with Russia pummeling Ukraine and moving the Line of Control daily.

Trump refuses to provide any financial or military assistance to Ukraine. But graciously allows Europeans to buy weapons from him provided they are ready to foot the bill. MBS of Saudi Arabia was gifted the country in return for buying weapons from US.

Trump keeps open the options of looting Ukraine’s wealth as payback for the help offered by Biden.

Lame security guarantees offered with little clarity.

We see the amount of deceipt cooked up by US media outlets, it is stagerring.

It is a shameless attempt to show US and its shenanigans in a good light, while proclaiming themselves as top of the heap on Press Freedom Index (whatever that means), and disparaging media of other countries.

Meanwhile, Zelensky has destroyed a generation.

Just for Laughs 😄

I went to the market to buy some teakwood for making furniture.

“क्या दाम है अच्छे सागवान लकड़े का?”

“साढ़े चार हज़ार रुपये।”

“क्या! इतना महेंगा कैसे???”

“तो क्या भैया, ये झाड़ पे उगता है क्या?”

😀

The grand daddy of apps

What is the grand daddy of apps?

If we don’t consider operating systems, then the single software which has its stamp of indispensability imprinted on all commercial organisations is SAP, the ERP software.

Effectively, at its core it is an accounting software. Tally for the big daddies. But with lots of added features and functionalities. Lots of customisation options, ability to add modules, to manage multiple currencies and so on.

Most every big Indian company worth its salt runs its operations on SAP. Even government organisations like Indian Railways, ONGC, NTPC, the oil companies, and even ISRO, use SAP extensively.

The mother of all ironies – our major software companies like Infosys, Wipro etc. run their accounting on SAP.

Why? Pray why?

India’s major banks run their banking operations on software from Infosys and they compete with big banks globally. Why can’t we have equally good offerings from Indian companies in the field of ERP?

Our humble accounting software Tally, generates a revenue of Rs 700 crores for its parent company. Why does it rest on its laurels? Why not set its sights on big brother SAP?

Hoping for Indian-origin state of the art ERP systems in the future.

Give me Indian apps.. Grr…

We boast of a software industry of upwards of USD 250 billion – 80% of which is from export alone.

As compared to this, China exports software worth just USD 50 billion every year.

Then why do we have to rely on foreign-made softwares and apps for seemingly innocuous tasks?

Why do we have to use American made Google Meet or China made Zoom for video conferences?

We don’t have a local mobile scanning app? Like CamScanner of China.

We don’t have a local video app? Like Tiktok of China.

We don’t have a local chat app? Like WeChat of China.

We don’t have a local browser app? Like UC Browser of China.

We don’t have a local file sharing app? Like ShareIt of China.

And of course, China has its own strong ecosystem of search and social and gaming apps. India has none to speak of.

Our own offerings are few and feeble. Not backed by the big players. More like dabblings of startups who face too formidable a challenge in the entrenched international apps.

Our desi startups seem more concerned with making apps to hail taxis or to send you to a restaurant or to deliver groceries to you.

Our big software players seem to be too comfortable in their own cosy cocoons. Each should be given the project to make one or more apps.

So that Indians don’t have to face the mortification of having to use a Chinese app to make a video call.
